Composer’s Note:
Even though I’m a violist, I've always been drawn to the cello. It is a beautiful instrument with a huge expressive and tonal range. This concerto, for two soloists and orchestra, explores the sound of the cello as it interacts with the orchestra in different contexts.
The first movement, in sonata form and at a moderate tempo, is majestic and lyrical. The second movement, titled “Rumination and Tarantella,” is by turns ambivalent, plaintive and aggressive, and combines the traditional 2nd and 3rd movements of a concerto into a more compact package.
